“The Devoted” 10×8 inches, oil on panel SOLD

Opening her third solo show with Wally Workman Gallery, Fatima Ronquillo’s most recent intimate oil paintings delve into the mysterious and alluring world of the Lover’s Eye. Originating in the 1700’s, Lover’s Eyes were Georgian miniatures depicting the eye of a loved one. These were usually commissioned watercolors on ivory with richly decorated frames and worn as jewelry. Ronquillo’s use of Lover’s Eyes in her already complex narrative paintings prompts us not only to wonder about the character depicted, but also of the character that is merely hinted at. What is the nature of their relationship? Is the eye representative of a forbidden love, a child lost, a spouse? Ronquillo continues, year after year, to further fascinate us with windows into mysterious worlds and to urge our imagination to take hold.  —Wally Workman Gallery
